Rabi al-Awwal 10: The Birth and Childhood of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Introduction

Where Was Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Born?

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born in Makkah. He belonged to the noble Quraysh tribe and the family of Banu Hashim.

His father was Abdullah ibn Abdul-Muttalib, and his mother was Aminah bint Wahb.

He Lost His Father Before His Birth

The Prophet’s father, Abdullah, passed away before Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born.

Thus, the Prophet ﷺ began his life without a father. His childhood contained many difficulties, but Allah protected and guided him throughout his life.

His Childhood

According to the customs of that time, young children in Makkah were often raised for a period in the desert environment.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was cared for by his foster mother Halimah al-Sa'diyyah (RA). His early childhood among the people of the desert was an important part of his life.

The Death of His Mother

When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was around six years old, his mother, Aminah, passed away.

After that, his grandfather Abdul-Muttalib took responsibility for him. However, his grandfather also passed away not long afterward.

His uncle Abu Talib then took care of him.

A Noble Character from an Early Age

Even before receiving revelation, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known among the people of Makkah for his honesty and trustworthiness.

He became known as As-Sadiq (the Truthful) and Al-Amin (the Trustworthy).

“Did He not find you an orphan and give you shelter?”

Stay away from lying, backbiting, and wrongdoing.

There is no universally established authentic evidence that the 10th of Rabi al-Awwal was definitely the birth date of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Therefore, we should not establish a specific prayer, fast, or special act of worship specifically for this date without reliable evidence.

Rather, the established acts of worship from the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah should be practiced throughout the year.
