Rabi al-Awwal 11: What Was the Noble Character of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Like?

Introduction

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the finest example for humanity. His worship, manners, treatment of people, family life, patience, forgiveness, and mercy all provide valuable lessons for Muslims.

Allah praised his character, saying:

“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”
— Qur’an 68:4

Therefore, rather than considering the 11th of Rabi al-Awwal a day with a specially prescribed act of worship, we can use it as an opportunity to learn about the noble character of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and apply his teachings in our lives.

1. Truthfulness

Even before receiving revelation, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known among the people of Makkah for his honesty and trustworthiness.

We should also speak the truth in every situation—in business, family life, friendships, and everyday dealings.

2. Trustworthiness

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known as a trustworthy person. People felt safe entrusting their possessions and responsibilities to him.

A Muslim should protect other people's property, secrets, responsibilities, and trusts.

3. Mercy and Compassion

The Prophet ﷺ showed great mercy and compassion toward people. His kindness extended to children, the weak, the needy, and many different members of society.

Allah says:

“And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.”
— Qur’an 21:107

His example teaches us to care about the difficulties of others and respond with kindness.

4. Forgiveness

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ demonstrated remarkable forgiveness even after experiencing rejection and hardship.

His life teaches us that forgiveness is not a sign of weakness. It can be a sign of strength, patience, and sincere faith.

5. Humility

The Prophet ﷺ was humble and did not treat people with arrogance. He interacted naturally with ordinary people and showed respect toward others.

We should also avoid arrogance and develop humility in our daily lives.

6. Kindness Toward Family

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught Muslims to treat their families well. He said:

“The best of you are those who are best to their families.”
— Jami` at-Tirmidhi

This reminds us that good character should begin at home. Being kind to our family is an important part of Islamic character.

7. Love for Children

The Prophet ﷺ showed affection and kindness toward children. He greeted them and treated them gently.

We should therefore treat children with patience, love, respect, and compassion.

8. Good Treatment of Neighbors

Islam gives great importance to the rights of neighbors. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strongly encouraged Muslims to treat their neighbors well.

We should avoid causing them harm, help them when they are in difficulty, and treat them with respect.

9. Compassion for the Poor and Needy

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ cared deeply about poor and vulnerable people.

A Muslim should help those in need according to their ability, support orphans, provide food to the hungry, and assist people facing hardship.

10. Controlling Anger

Anger is a natural human emotion, but Islam teaches us to control it.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The strong person is not the one who can overpower others, but the one who controls himself when angry.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

Therefore, when we become angry, we should try to remain calm, avoid harmful words, and control our actions.

Good Deeds for the 11th of Rabi al-Awwal

There is no specific act of worship authentically prescribed exclusively for this date. Instead, we can perform established good deeds such as:

• Performing the five daily prayers on time
• Reciting the Qur’an
• Sending Salawat upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
• Reading his Seerah
• Speaking the truth
• Treating parents and family members kindly
• Checking on our neighbors
• Helping the poor and needy
• Controlling our anger
• Learning and practicing a Sunnah

Conclusion

The noble character of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was one of the greatest manifestations of the beauty of Islam.

Loving the Prophet ﷺ should not be limited to words. We should also strive to follow his character and teachings.
