Rabi al-Awwal 8: What Deeds Should a Muslim Do?

Introduction

Rabi al-Awwal is an important month in Islamic history. Several significant events from the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ took place during this month.

However, Muslims should not consider a particular date as having special religious practices unless there is authentic evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Allah says:

Sending blessings and peace upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is a virtuous deed.

Allah says:

“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O believers, invoke Allah’s blessings upon him and salute him with worthy greetings of peace.”

We should therefore send Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ whenever we have the opportunity.

3. Learn and Follow the Sunnah

True love for Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is not merely a claim. One of the greatest signs of loving him is learning and following his Sunnah.

We can study his:

Method of prayer
Etiquette of eating and drinking
Sleeping habits
Treatment of other people
Treatment of his family
Mercy and forgiveness
Rights of neighbors

Learning these teachings and applying them in our lives is a beautiful way to follow the Prophet ﷺ.

4. Recite the Qur’an

There is no specific Surah prescribed specifically for the 8th of Rabi al-Awwal.

However, reciting the Qur’an is an excellent deed at all times. Along with recitation, we should try to understand its meaning and apply its guidance to our lives.

5. Make Tawbah and Seek Forgiveness

Every human being makes mistakes. Therefore, we should regularly turn to Allah in repentance and seek His forgiveness.

A simple form of Istighfar is:

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Transliteration: Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayh.

Meaning: “I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him.”

6. Follow the Prophet’s Noble Character

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was an example of excellent character.

Allah says:

“And indeed, you possess a great moral character.”
— Qur’an 68:4

Therefore, we should examine our own character. We can try to control our anger, avoid lying, forgive others, speak politely, and treat people with kindness.

7. Treat Family and Relatives Well

The Prophet ﷺ taught Muslims to treat their families with kindness and compassion.

We should therefore try to maintain good relationships with our family members and relatives, avoid hurting them, and fulfill their rights.

8. Give Charity

Helping poor and needy people is a great act of righteousness.

Depending on our ability, we can:

Give money to someone in need
Provide food to a poor person
Help an elderly or helpless person
Support someone facing difficulty

Even a small act of kindness can be valuable when done sincerely for Allah.

9. Stay Away from Sin

Along with performing good deeds, we must also try to stay away from sins.

We should especially avoid:

Lying
Backbiting
Slandering others
Immoral or inappropriate content
Violating people's rights
Arrogance
Unlawful earnings

A successful Muslim strives to replace sinful habits with righteous actions.

10. Study the Life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

We can use this day to learn more about the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Studying his life in Makkah and Madinah, his patience, his dedication to spreading Islam, his treatment of the Companions, and his concern for his Ummah can strengthen our faith and inspire us to improve our lives.

A Simple Deed Plan for Today

On the 8th of Rabi al-Awwal, you can follow this simple plan:

Perform the five daily prayers on time.
Recite some Qur’an.
Make plenty of Istighfar.
Send Salawat upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Read something from the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ.
Treat your family with kindness.
Give charity according to your ability.
Make a sincere decision to leave at least one sinful habit.
Before sleeping, review your deeds of the day.

An Important Reminder

There is no authentic evidence establishing a specific prayer, specific number of Dhikr, special fast, or special religious ceremony specifically for the 8th of Rabi al-Awwal.

Therefore, we should not consider such practices to be specially prescribed acts of worship without reliable evidence.

Instead, we should perform the acts of worship that are established through the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah throughout the year.
